Sulfates cause foam

Sensitive skin can be so darn uncomfortable and even embarrassing at times.

Irritation can show up as -

  • redness,
  • inflammation,
  • Dryness
  • Itchy skin
  • Tingly skin
  • Rashes
Sensitive skin can be aggravated or even caused by everyday factors like shaving, stress, allergies or environmental factors like the wind, heat or cold.
But chemicals common used in n many personal care products are a well known irritant and can damage delicate skin tissue causing skin sensitivity and irritation.

Our spotlight today is on the chemical referred to as sulphates.

So what are Sulphates and why are they so bad?

Sulphates are a broad term for synthetic sulfate-based chemicals such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). These compounds are produced from petroleum and plant sources.

It is commonly added to cleaning and personal care products because it is very inexpensive and provides the illusion of luxury by creating a thicker product with more foaming action.

Products that typically contain SLS include:
  • Body wash
  • Cleansers
  • Soaps
  • Shampoos
  • Detergents
  • Toothpastes
  • Floor cleaners
  • Degreasers
  • Car wash products

Per the EWG  there is strong evidence that SLS is a irritant. Studies have concluded that it would most strip the skin of its natural oils which can cause dry skin, irritation and reactions. It can also be very irritating on the eyes. Inflammatory skin reactions can include itchy skin and scalp, eczema and dermatitis. For some people, continuous use can trigger a reaction as SLS can penetrate the skin making it more vulnerable to the absorption of foreign irritants.

There is also the concern about the impact on marine life as a result of sulfates washing down our drains.

So what can you do?

Make Better  & Safer Choices

Simply check the ingredients on your skincare products, especially body washes, soaps and cleansers to ensure they do not contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or sodium laureth sulfate.

Choose natural products free of nasty chemicals that are much safer for your skin like our elderflower body wash and natural cleansing bars which give your skin a safe, sulfate free clean. Our natural, nourishing  ingredients will not dry out your skin or strip it of its vital nutrients.
